This hasn't been confirmed, but I am now 99.9% sure that I have been using fabric softener instead of laundry detergent to ''clean'' my clothes for the past 3 weeks.
This mistake was pointed out by my two non-French speaking American visitors who recognized the milky-white substance. I too had questioned the liquid when I opened the container, however, my knowledge of domestic French words is limited and I figured it was just a special French version of detergent. After Missy and Erin questioned my ''detergent,'' I read the bottle a little more closely and, sure enough, it said adoucisseur, which means softener.
So, though my clothes have been soft for the past couple weeks, they are by no means clean...
This was an upsetting discovery, but it didn't keep me from enjoying the weekend. Friday night, Missy, Erin and I met up with Brittany and Suzanne and Amanda (Suzanne's Americana visitor) for dinner at Restaurant Jules in the 2nd arrondisement - near my old stomping grounds. After our French friends, Mathilde and Ann-Sophie, were unable to recommend a good, French (but not wallet-breaking expensive) restaurant because ''French people our age don't really do the restaurant scene,'' we took matters into our own hands. Brit found R. Jules on the ever-reliable Google, and it was a fantastic experience. Good service, good wine, and great food. Most of us tried the plat du jour which was duck confit. It was the best duck confit I've ever had (not that I've had that much duck confit...).
After dinner we stopped by a party one of Brit's film festival friends was throwing in none other than my old apartment building! I was happy to be able to show Missy and Erin my first Parisien home; unfortunately, the prostitutes were sparse that night so they didn't get the full experience. We didn't stay too long because we were all tired, and had a big day of sightseeing/shopping planned for Saturday.
